Maria MichalosClinical Counsellor and SupervisorI am a qualified clinical counsellor and psychotherapist with many years of experience in education, mental health, disability, wellbeing and community sectors.
I am also a qualified clinical supervisor who provides supervision to counsellors, psychotherapist, other allied health professionals and front line workers in an integrative approach, helping people enhance their professional competence, promote ethical practice and improve client outcomes. My specialty is working with people who present issues with grief, loss, trauma, anxiety, stress and depression. My therapy approach is integrative and holistic, meaning working with different modalities of therapy to best support my clients needs and goals. Some therapeutic approaches are cognitive behavioural, trauma informed, mindfulness, narrative, grief and loss therapy, expressive therapies, visual arts and somatic psychotherapy. I help people understand different aspects of themselves, including finding coping strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, grief and depression. I work holistically, meaning focusing on the whole person's mental, biological, emotional, physical, spiritual and social aspects of self. Therapy to me is working together with my clients by integrating the whole person and understanding their needs whilst working towards goals and future plans for better health and wellbeing. Background: My background includes 30 years experience in visual arts, design and mindfulness approaches to my clinical work, which are an important part of my personal life and self-care. I have developed and implemented many group work therapy. Some groups were with children and youth at community centres and schools implementing mindfulness and art therapy 10 week programs and workshops. I also work with adults tailoring groups for anxiety, mental health, grief, mindfulness approaches and art based practices. My speciality the last 8 years has been working with carers and their families related to their caring roles, including identifying changing roles and experiences of grief and loss. I have also worked together with children, youth, adults and elderly in a variety of mental health, disability, aged, schools and local community sectors, with a variety of backgrounds from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People across South Australia and Northern Territory.
