What is Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling is classified as "talk therapy", which is an opportunity to talk openly about difficulties, problems and feelings that are present. Counselling normally consists of exploring emotions, mental state, physical, social and spiritual problems. Counselling can help one focus on goals, strengths, values, including helping you understand and possibly change behaviours and thought patterns that no longer serve you. Counselling can provide you with a sense of direction, a greater ability to achieve goals and clarification.

Psychotherapy is a collection of therapy techniques, designed to help you holistically. It is an engagement that focuses on the mental, emotional, physical, relational and spiritual aspects of a person. In psychotherapy the therapist and client work together to understanding the conscious and unconscious aspects of ones present lived experience. Psychotherapy supports processes of change allowing a person to understand patterns of discomfort, dissatisfaction, or suffering. Psychotherapy can be used as integrative therapeutic techniques, these include cognitive behavioural, expressive, narrative, mindfulness approaches and psychodynamic.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can be interchangeable and currently available via Telehealth and in-person.

Types of Therapy

Grief and Loss
Many individuals experience grief and loss in their lives. This can be due to death of a loved one or a pet, loss of a job, relationship or home. People with disabilities can lose a sense of belonging, independence and dignity. Grief can be debilitating, emotionally overwhelming and difficult to move through and forward.
If you are experiencing grief or loss or feel hopeless, then talking to a therapist may help deal with some of the emotional pain and find some meaning again.
Some therapies used for grief are usually person centred as we all experience grief very different. Therapies such as expressive therapies, rituals, working through the pain and having a better understanding of our individual grief is beneficial.

Depression
Depression can leave someone feeling helpless and hopeless.
Some signs of depression are; not going out anymore, not getting things done, withdrawing, unable to concentrate, feeling tired, lack of energy, crying spells, loss of interest and sleeping problems. Symptoms of depression are usually related to frequent self criticism, blame, worry, pessimism, impaired memory, confusion, indecisiveness, thoughts of death and suicide. One might feel sad, guilt, anger, irritability and moody. Major depression can cause distress to the person and will interfere with work and relationships.
Therapy can help you address the underlying cause of your depression, unable you to find motivation and help you navigate through your emotional pain.

Trauma
Trauma is defined as a response to a distressing or disturbing event or a series of events that overwhelms a person's inability to cope. Trauma can be related to violence, abuse, sexual abuse and or witnessing the trauma. Trauma can effect the brain, our stress response, and overall health.
Trauma therapy can help a person identify their trigger responses, develop healthier coping mechanisms and decrease traumatic stress symptoms. Together with your therapist you can develop healthier patterns and behaviours in relation to your trauma.

Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. There are many types of anxiety these include generalised anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, and panic disorders.
Anxiety is a feeling of excessive fear and worry, usually about past of future events, irritability, impatience and nervousness. People may avoid situations, become obsessive, distressed in social situations, and increase the use of drugs and alcohol. Some symptoms one might experience is pounding heart, chest pain, rapid or shallow breathing, headaches, sweating, stomach pains, shaking, muscle aches and pains.
Therapy can help you address problems related to anxiety and help you find tools and coping mechanisms to deal with difficult emotions and situations.
Anxiety can be managed through the use of cognition therapy, mindfulness based approaches, interpersonal psychotherapy, and problem-solving therapy.

Relationships and Family Conflict
We all experience some sort of relationship issues or problems in our lifetime, be it an intimate relationship, friendship, work colleague, sibling, parent or children.
Relationships can be difficult to navigate, especially when there is conflict or different viewpoints or opinions. Relationship therapy can be beneficial to address concerns and help you mediate some resolution.
Family therapy can benefit parents having difficulties with their children, and/or teens to strengthen emotional connection, discuss issues for better communication and understanding. This type of therapy is designed to address some problems within the family dynamics, have a better understanding of each other and take home some strategies to work on.

Self Harm and Suicide Ideation
Sometimes life can be really tough, especially when you feel as though no one is listening, supporting you or feeling alone. If you are thinking about or planning suicide, there is much support and therapy is one of them.
Therapy can help you identify your thoughts and behaviours, offer you and plan other ways to relieve distress and use coping strategies that do not involve self-injury.
Please be aware that self-harm/suicidal risk is not normally suitable if you wish to do on-line or telephone sessions.
Please discuss this with the therapist prior to commencement.
